Family History

James was born in 1895 in Retford and was the son of Thomas a porter at goods warehouse on canal wharf and Ellen Newstead. Thomas and Ellen had a very large family of 11 children however one died before the 1911 census. In the 1901 census the family are living at Trent Street, Retford, James is 6 years of age and living with him are his siblings Charlotte - George - William - Rose and Frances. by the 1911 census the family are living at Canal Cottages, Retford, James is 16 years of age and a coal porter living at the address with his sister Frances may.

Military History

James enlisted in Retford and served with the 12th battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby ) Regiment. He first entered a theatre of war in France on 29th August 1915 (medal card index ) he died of wounds on 8th July 1916 and he is buried in Bailleul Communal Cemetery Extension , Nord, France grave reference II E 64
