Tom was born in 1893 in Huthwaite and was the son of Joseph and Elizabeth Newman (née Chadwick). His father Joseph was born in 1865 in Winsford, Cheshire, and his mother Elizabeth was born in 1868 in Cuckney, Nottinghamshire. They were married in September 1888 (Worksop Registration District) and had the following four children: Dick b1889, Winifred b1891, Tom b1893 and Joseph b1896. All the children were born in Huthwaite. In 1911 census they were living at Harper Lane, Station Street, Huthwaite, and shown as Joseph 46 yrs a colliery onsetter, his wife Elizabeth 43 yrs and their children Dick 22 yrs a colliery banksman, Winifred 20 yrs, Tom 18 yrs a boot and shoe repairer and Joseph 15 yrs a colliery banksman.
Tom enlisted in Sutton in Ashfield, giving his place of birth and residence as Huthwaite. He served with the 8th battalion Royal Scots (Lothian Regiment). He was killed in action on 22 March 1918. Tom has no known grave and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, France (Bay 1 and 2).
Mansfield Reporter, 19 April 1918 (extract): ‘Memorial Service. At Huthwaite Parish Church a memorial service was held on Sunday morning to eight Huthwaite men, who have met with their deaths in France or died of wounds, their names being: Adams C. Evans, Evans T. Newman, Pendleton, Godber, Hardy and Riley. There was a large congregation, including the members of the Parish Church Bible Class, to which Newman belonged. St George’s flag was at half-mast on the church tower, and the ‘Roll of Honour’ was surrounded by a laurel wreath. The Rev. FN Beswick officiated.’ (www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk)
