Alfred was born in Retford in 1879 and was the son of Ellen Nicholson. Ellen married Edward Layhe a plumber prior to 1901 when in the census of that year they are living at of 1, Queen St., Retford, with his daughter Annie 19 years and Alfred 22 years a flour miller. By the 1911 census the family are still living at 1 Queens Street, Alfred is now 32 years of age and as Ostler
Alfred enlisted at Retford on 12th December 1915 ,he gave his age as 36 years and 10 months and his occupation as that of butcher , his next of kin was given as his mother Ellen Layhe of 1 Queen Street, Retford. He was placed into the reserveS on 13th December 1915. He was mobilised for war on 5th April 1916 and posted on 8th April to the Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derbys) Regiment with service number 41520. He was promoted to Lance Corporal on 30th September 1916 and went to France on 5th August 1917 . He was later transferred on 22nd August 1917 to the Royal Scots Regiment. He was killed in action on 26th September 1917 , he has no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium
