Family History

Cyril Carfield Straw was born in 1895 he was the son of Herbert a colliery deputy and Betsy Straw née Hinds and the brother of Rebecca, Herbert Hollis, Edwin Marchant, Arthur Edmund. Herbert was born in 1859 at Sutton in Ashfield, Elizabeth Hinds (Betsy) was born in 1861 at Heage, Derbyshire, married on 26th April 1881 at St Mary Magdalene, Sutton in Ashfield they went on to have 10 children, sadly two died in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 the family lived at 5 Pelham Street Sutton in Ashfield , Herbert is 52 yrs and is a colliery deputy he is living with his wife Betsy 50 yrs and their children, Cyril Carfield is 15 yrs an is a telegraph messenger boy.

Military History

Sergeant Cyril Carfield Straw, enlisted at Sutton in Ashfield he served with the 10th Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment, landing in France on 26th August 1915 he died of wounds on 15th July 1916. He is buried in Mont Huon Military Cemetery, Le Treport.
