Family History

John Henry Colley was born Bridgenorth, Shropshire in 1887. He was an inmate at Bridgnorth Union Workhouse at 4 years old. 10 years later he was one of many pupils at S.E. Shropshire District School, described as a pauper and working as a gardener. In 1911 he was living as a boarder at Shenstone Court, Nr Litchfield, Stafffordshire and working as a gardener. Following this, he was employed at Blyth Hall as a foreman gardener.

Military History

Pte. J H Colley Worksop Guardian 10 September 1915 News reached Blyth on Saturday of the death of Pte J H Colley, who with four others from the garden staff of Blyth Hall, volunteered early in September last year and joined the 6th Lincolnshire Regiment. Colley, who was foreman gardener, was a bright genial fellow and the news was received with the greatest regret. He died in action in the Dardanelles on August 9th. News also reached Blyth of four inhabitants being wounded whilst fighting in Gallipoli – Pte. Edward Fielding, 6th Lincolns, and Ptes. Charles Baker, Willey Baker and Vernon Scott, Sherwood Foresters.

Extra Information

In September 1914, he and fellow Blyth Hall worker, Verdon Scott, joined the 6th Battalion of the Lincolnshire Regiment at Retford. (their regimental numbers followed in suit). They both died together on the same day at Galipolli. Research by Colin Dannatt
