Herbert Webster (junior) was born at Papplewick, Nottinghamshire in 1897 and was the son of Herbert Webster (senior) a domestic gardener and Sarah Jane Webster née Dalton who had moved to live at 4 Laburnum Cottages, Redhill, Arnold, Nottingham. His father Herbert Webster (senior) was born in 1867 at Sneinton and his mother Sarah Jane Dalton was born in 1870 at Oxton, they were married in 1896 their marriage was recorded in the Southwell Registration district. they went on to have a further child a daughter Ivy born 1909 at Papplewick. In the 1911 census the family is living at Main St Papplewick, they are shown as Herbert 44 yrs a domestic gardener, he is living with his wife Sarah Jane 41 yrs and his children Herbert 14 years of age unemployed and Ivy 2 years of age.
Lance Corporal Herbert Webster attested on 1st December 1915, he gave his age as 18 yrs 308 days, he was a gardener and was living at 69 Station Road, Mansfield Woodhouse, his next of kin was his father Herbert of the same address. He was posted to the reserves and mobilised for war on 8th April 1916 at Derby and once he had received his training he was posted to the 2/5th Battalion. He landed in France on 10th July 1917 and was appointed Lance Corporal on 23rd February 1918. In March 1918 the battalion was in the area of Noreuil – Ervillers in France, he was killed in action in this area, his body was never identified and he has no known grave, he is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, France Bay 7.
