Family History

Arthur Webster was born in 1896 at Kirkby the son of James a coal miner hewer and Phoebe Webster née Garner and the brother of Albert, George, Phillip, Annie, Nellie and Lawrence Webster. James was born in 1873 at Peakirk, Northamptonshire, Phoebe Garner was born in 1875 at Kirkby in Ashfield , married in 1894 at Basford they went on to have 6 children. In 1911 the family lived at 9 Chapel Street Nuncargate Nottinghamshire

Military History

Private Arthur Webster enlisted at Mansfield whilst residing at Nuncargate, Kirkby, he was wounded on 21 August 1915 when the battalion attacked towards Hetman Chair, Gallipoli. Lieutenant (later Colonel) Scothern noted '... the casualties were again heavy. Only two officers were left. Lt-Col Bosanquet (CO) and Major Blackburne (2/IC) both being killed' Arthur spent a week on a hospital ship sailing to Alexandria in Egypt and then went to the tented hospital by the sea. He died of his wounds on 29 August 1915 and was buried in Alexandria (Chatby) Military and War Memorial cemetery, grave F.169.
