Family History

George Dennis was born in 1890 at Radford he was the son of Thomas a coal miner hewer and Eliza Ann Dennis née Walters of 38 George Street, Mansfield Woodhouse. Thomas was born in 1867 at Brownhills Staffordshire, Eliza Ann Walters was born in 1872 at Radford, Nottingham, they were married in 1892 at Nottingham and went on have 13 children, sadly 4 died in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 Thomas was living at 38 George St Mansfield Woodhouse, he is 44 yrs and a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Eliza Ann 39 yrs and 7 of their children. George married Georgina, Green, on 9th April 1910 at St Edmunds Church, Mansfield Woodhouse they had 2 children, Walter, born 25th September 1910 and Winifred, born 24th July 1913 In 1911 George and Georgina were living with George's grand-parents at 40 George Street, Mansfield Woodhouse, next to his parents. George is 21 yrs and an onsetter labourer in a colliery, he is living with his wife Georgina 24 yrs and son Walter under 1 year. Commencing 16th December 1918 his widow was awarded a pension of 25 shillings and 5 pence a week.

Military History

Driver George Dennis initially enlisted on 5th September 1914 at Mansfield, he was 25 yrs and 43 days old and was a coal miner, he served with the service number 15269 and was posted to the Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He was however discharged from the Army on 5th December 1914 as being medically unfit for war service. He later re enlisted and served with the 19th divisional Ammunition Column Royal Field Artillery landing in France on 6th November 1915 he died of wounds on 31st May 1918 and is buried at Marfaux British Cemetery, France.
