Family History

James Bowman was born in 1891 at Little Gringley he was the son of the late David a farmer and Janet Bowman née Paterson. of William Wood Farm Shirebrook. David was born in 1838 at Cambuslang, Lancashire, he died in 1916 he was died aged 78 yrs, Janet Paterson was born in 1850 at East Kilbride, they were married on 23rd July 1873 at East Kilbride, they went on to have 13 children. In 1911 the family are living at William Wood Farm, Shirebrook, David 73 yrs is a farmer, he is living with his wife Janet 61 yrs and 8 of their children including James 20 yrs a farm worker.

Military History

Private James Bowman enlisted at Nottingham, whilst residing at Chesterfield, he served with the South Nottinghamshire Hussars, he was killed in action on 28th November 1917 in Egypt. He is buried at Ramelwh War Cemetery, Israel.

Mansfield Chronicle Advertiser; 20/01/1917: Pte James Bowman, son of Mr & Mrs D Bowman of William Wood Farm, Shirebrook, has been killed on 28/11/1917 aged 26 years old. Brother, Alec is serving with the Army: A letter from his commanding officer was printed in the 27/12/1917 edition. Inscription on family headstone, St Peter and St Paul Churchyard (Church Warsop): 'Also James Bowman, 6th son of the above [David Bowman] killed in Palestine, Nov 28th 1917, aged 26 years.' His brother, Alec also served and he survived.
