Family History

Samuel Harry Hampshire was born in 1893 at Nottingham, he was the son of John Henry a poster writer and Ellen Maria Hampshire née Tottey of West View, Morven Avenue, Mansfield Woodhouse. John Henry was born in 1865, Ellen Maria Tottey was born in 1863 they were both born in Birmingham, they were married in 1886 their marriage was registered in the Aston, Warwickshire registration district, they went on to have 7 children. In 1911 the family wee living at 71 West Hill Drive, Mansfield, John Henry is 46 yrs a poster writer, living with his wife Ellen Maria 48 yrs and their children including Samuel Harry 18 yrs a poster writer. Samuel left £126 13s & 1d to his father in his will.

Military History

Private Samuel Harry Hampshire attested on 9th December 1915 in Sheffield giving his age as 23 yrs and his occupation as working in a shell shop at Vickers Ltd, Sheffield. He was posted to the reserves and mobilised for war on 20th March 1916 and served with the 2/4th battalion York and Lancashire Regiment. He embarked from Southampton on 13th January 1917 disembarking the following day at Le Harve, reported missing on action on 3rd May 1917 it was later confirmed he was killed in action on that date he is buried at H.A.C cemetery-St- Mein, France.
