Ernest Clay was born in 1897 at Blidworth and was the son of Thomas Henry a coal miner and Harriet Clay née Denman of 41 Edwards Street, East Kirkby His father Thomas was born in 1868 at Blidworth and his mother Harriett Denman was also born in 1868 at Blidworth, they were married in 1892 theri marriage was recorded at the Mansfield registration district, they go on to have the following children, William 1894, Ernest b1897,Dorothy b1899, Charles b1901, Victor b1903 and Gladys Clay b1907 all were born at Blidworth except their last child Gladys who was born in Eat Kirkby. In the 1911 census the family are living at 41 Edward Street East Kirkby, they are shown as Thomas 43 yrs a coal miner, he is living with his wife Harriett 43 yrs and their children, William 17 yrs a colliery banksman, Ernest 14 yrs a colliery banksman, Dorothy 12 yrs a scholar, Charles 10 yrs a scholar, Victor 8 yrs a scholar and Gladys 4 years of age. .
Lance Corporal Ernest Clay enlisted at Newark on 17th October 1914, he gave his age as 19 yrs and 4 months his address was 41 Edwards Street, East Kirkby, his next of kin was his father Thomas Henry of the same address , his occupation was a collier. He was posted to the 1/8th battalion Sherwood Foresters and landed in France on 2nd March 1915, was appointed Lance Corporal 1st September 1915 and was killed in action at Hohenzollern Redoubt, France, 14th October 1915, age 19. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Loos Memorial, Pas de Calais, France. Panel 87 to 89.
