Ralph James Boness was born in 1893 at Ely and was the son of Ralph a groom and Lucy Boness née Leach of Ely, Cambridgeshire. His father Ralph was born in 1859 at Rampton Cambridgeshire and his mother Lucy Leach was born in 1860 at Hadenham, Cambridgeshire, they were married in 1894 their marriage was recorded in the Ely Registration area, they went on to have 4 children, sadly 1 was to die in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children listed on the 1901/1911 census were Ralph James bb1892 and Robert Leach b1902 Lincoln. In the 1911 census his parents are living at Lyndhurst, Mansfield, Nottinghamshire and were shown as Ralph 52 yrs a groom, he is living with his wife Lucy 51 yrs and their son Robert Leach 9yrs In the same 1911 census we find that Ralph James had left the family home, he is living at Brockwood Hill, Epperstone, Nottinghamshire and is shown as being 18 yrs and single and a waggoner on a farm, he is living with Robert Greaves 25 yrs a farm labourer and his family. Ralph James married his wife Mary Wright Bemrose (born 2nd September 1890 ) in 1912 at Newark, they lived at 3 Shepherds Row, North Gate, Newark, they went on to have 2 children, Ralph Thomas born 12th August 1913 and Robert Siege born 4th November 1914. Following his death his widow was awarded a pension of 22 shillings and 11 pence which commenced on 15th April 1918 His widow later remarried to become Mary Wright Smallridge (formerly Boness), of 2, Sheppard's Row, North Gate, Newark.

Military History

Rifleman Ralph James Boness enlisted in Nottinghamshire whilst residing at Newark, he served with the 7th battalion King's Royal Rifle Corps. He died of wounds and is buried at Messines Ridge British Cemetery, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.
