Henry Newman McKears was born in 1881 at Newark and was the son of William a grocers traveller and the late Lucy McKears née Smith of 11 Wellington Road, Newark. His father William was born in 1856 at Caythorpe and his mother was born in 1851 at Newark , she died in 1904 aged 53 yrs, they were married in 1877 in Newark they went on to have 10 children, sadly one died in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children all born in Newark were, William Alfred b1878, James b1879, Henry Newman b1881, Frederick b1882, Mildred b1884, Margaret b1886, Charles b1888, Walter b1890 and Phillip b1894. Harry Newman McKears married his wife Nellie Constance Houghland in 1903 in Sheffield, they went on to have a son Allan William b 1905 in Sheffield, they lived in Sheffield at 373 London Road, in the 1911 census the family are living at 373 London Road Sheffield and are shown as Henry Newman 30 yrs a tailors dealer, he is living with his wife Nellie Constance 33 yrs and their son Allan William 6yrs. In the same 1911 census we find his father and siblings living at 11 Wellington Road, Newark, they are shown as William 58 yrs a widow and grocers traveller, he is living with his children, Mildred 27 yrs at home, Margaret 25 yrs a teachers assistant, Walter 21 yrs an auctioneers clerk and Philip 17 yrs an engineers clerk.
Private Harry McKears enlisted at Sheffield February 1917 and served with the 2/9th battalion Manchester Regiment. He was killed in action on 9th October 1917 he was in a shell hole in front of position and was hit by three bullets in shoulder and chest, lying out for 24 hours. He is buried at Tyne Cott, Cemetery, grave reference XXVI.F.19
Article published Newark Advertiser 31st October 1917 :- Son of Mr McKears, 11 Wellington Road. Joined February 1917, to France four months later. On the 9th was in a shell hole in front of position. Hit by three bullets in shoulder and chest, lying out for 24 hours. Brothers: Walter McKears, gassed, after ten days in French hospital, now at Stourbridge. Joined York & Lancs. November 1916, in France since December 1916. L/Cpl Charlie McKears, Sherwood Foresters, enlisted 1914, to France September 1915, has lost left leg. Fred, called up July 1917, MT/ASC, now a driver on Salisbury Plain. Youngest Phillip, tried to join November 1914, but rejected because of eyesight. Eldest brother, William, on government work at Somerset House.
