Family History

Herbert Mills was born on 12th February 1881 at Nottingham and was the son of John a plasterer and Mary Mills née Wright of 48 Poplar Street, Nottingham. His father John was born in 1840 in Nottingham and his mother Mary Wright was born in 1842 at Nottingham, they were married in 1859 at Nottingham and went on to have 13 children, sadly six were to die in infancy or early childhood. Herbert married his wife Edith Jane Leverton (born 15th October 1882 Lowdham ) on 4th April 1904, the marriage was recorded in the Southwell Registration district they lived at Halls Croft, Bleasby they had the following children, Cyril Vincent born 12th February 1905, Norman Leverton born 20th October 1906, George William born 1909 and died 1911 and Frank William born 13th April 1914 . In 1911 they lived on Ton Lane, Lowdham and were shown as Herbert 30 yrs a plasterers labourer he is living with his wife Edith Jane 29 yrs and their children Cyril Vincent 6 yrs, George William 2 yrs, also living with them is Herbert's widowed mother in law Charlotte Leverton 72 yrs. In the same 1911 census his parents are living at 48 Poplar Street, Nottingham and are shown as John 71 yrs a plasterer he is living with his wife Mary 70 yrs a lace worker. Following his death his widow Edith was awarded a pension of 29 shillings and 7 pence a week commencing on 6th January 1919. Herbert's widow, Edith, married William Riley in 1924 and they lived at North Farm Bleasby, Nottinghamshire.

Military History

Sapper Herbert Mills enlisted at Nottingham he initially served with the service number 57915 in the Northumberland Fusiliers Regiment and was serving with the 229th Field Company Royal Engineers when he was reported missing on 9 April 1918 but his death was not confirmed until the following year. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Hainaut, Belgium.
