Arthur Fell was born in 1896 at Balderton and was the son of Mrs Elizabeth Reeve née Fell of 3 Nelson Road, Balderton, Newark. His mother Elizabeth Fell was born in 1876 at Balderton, she married her husband George Albert Reeve (born 1868 Sittingbourne, Kent ) in 1899 at Newark they went on to have the following children, George Alfred Reeve b1901, Edith Alice Reeve b1903, Elizabeth Ann Reeve b1905, Ernest Reeve b1908, Emily May Reeve b1910 and Laura Ruth Reeve b 1912, all were born in Balderton. In the 1911 census the family are living at Mount Pleasant, Balderton, Newark and are shown as George Albert Reeve 43 yrs a corrugated roof erector, he is living with his wife Elizabeth 35 yrs and their children , Arthur Fell 15 yrs a plaster mill labourer (he is shown as a step son) George Alfred Reeve 10 yrs a scholar, Edith Alice Reeve 8 yrs a scholar, Elizabeth Ann Reeve 6 yrs, Ernest Reeve 3 yrs and Emily May Reeve 11 months of age .
Private Arthur Fell enlisted on 29th August 1914 at Newark, he gave his age as 18 yrs and 170 days and was a stoker.. He was posted to the Lincolnshire Regiment and joined the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force on 1st July 1915, after developing Enteritis was returned to England on 15th October 1915 and was treated at no 15th General Hospital, St Bartholomews, London. Discharged from hospital on 16th November 1915 he was posted to the British Expeditionary Force on 6th April 1916 and joined the 1st battalion Lincolnshire Regiment in the field on 29th April 1916. He took part on the first day of the Battle of the Somme 1st July 1916 where he was killed in action, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.
Article published 4th April 1917 in the Newark Advertiser :- Son of Mrs Elizabeth Reeve, 3 Nelson Road, New Balderton, Newark. Prior to the war, worked for Messrs. Cafferata & Co. Enlisted shortly after the outbreak in the 6th Lincolns and fought at the Dardanelles. From there was invalided home with dysentery. After a six month stay in England was transferred to the 1st Lincolns and sent to France. Last seen in the charge of 1st July (first day of the Somme). Posted missing and declared dead in March 1917.
