William Wilkinson was born in 1887 in Besthorpe and was the son of Henry a farmer and Sarah Wilkinson née Denman of Besthorpe. Henry Wilkinson was born in 1846 at Besthorpe and Sarah Denman was born in 1847 at North Clifton, married in 1866 their marriage was recorded in the Nottingham Registration District , they went on to the have the following children, Ann b1868 South Clifton Sarah b1869 South Clifton, Betsy b1872 South Clifton, Mary b1875 South Clifton, Henry b1877 South Clifton, Irvin b1879 North Clifton , Amelia b1882 North Clifton, Edith b1884 Besthorpe, William b1887 Besthorpe, Russell b1889 Besthorpe and Herbert Stewart b1892 Besthorpe . William married Eveline Gertrude Robinson in 1909 their marriage was recorded in the Southwell Registration District, they went on to have two children Harry William b1909 and Kenneth b1911 both born Edwinstow and lived on High Street, Edwinstow. In 1911 the family lived on High Street Edwinstowe and were shown as William 24 yrs a postman, he is living with his wife Eveline 24yrs and their son Harry William 1 year. In 1911 his parents and siblings are living at Besthorpe village and are shown as Henry 66 yrs a farmer, he is living with his wife Sarah 65 yrs and their children, Edward Russel 22 yrs a farmers son, Herbert Stewart 19 yrs a labourer Following his death his widow Eveline was granted a pension of 25 shillings a week for herself and her two children.
Gunner William Wilkinson attested on 9th December 1915 at Worksop, he gave his age as 29 yrs and his occupation as that of a postman, his address was High Street, Edwinstow and his next of kin was his wife Eveline of the same address. He was posted to the reserves and mobilised for war 15th June 1916 posted to the Royal Garrison Artillery. He embarked from England on 28th January 1917 disembarking at Salonica on 18th February 1917 where he was posted to the 160th Heavy Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery. He died of Broncho Pneumonia at Salonica on 2nd January 1919 and is buried at Mikra British Cemetery, Kalamaria, Greece.
