Family History

William Sheldon was born in 1896 he was the son of the late Aaron a coal miner and Ann Mary Sheldon née Spurr. Aaron was born in 1875 at Middleton, Derbyshire, he died in 1903 aged 28 yrs Ann Mary Spurr was born in 1875 at Kirkby they were married in 1895 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district they had 5 children. Ann Mary remarried in 1906 at Mansfield to George Short born 1864 at Huthwaite, he was a coal miner, they went on to have 2 further children. In 1911 William was living with her and his step-father, George Short 47 yrs a coal miner at 13 Seventh Ave, Forest Town, he is 15 yrs of age and is a coal miner pony he is living with his mother Mary Short 36 yrs and his siblings

Military History

Private William Sheldon had previously served with the Royal Marines, but had purchased his discharge. Re-enlisted on 25th August 1914 aged 18 years and 143 days he was a coal miner road man. He served at Gallipoli from 13th September 1915 with 9th battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nott's and Derby Regiment). Reinforcements are shown as arriving with battalion on 14 September 1915. The battalion occupied the front line trenches from 11 November and were in the Lone Tree Gully area until 24th November. William was killed in action, probably by a sniper on 19 November and was buried nearby, in all likelihood, Lone Tree Gully Cemetery. After the Armistice he was re-interred in Azmak Cemetery, Suvla Visited and photo taken plus cross laid by John Morse
