Francis Sydney Pickering was born in 1888 at Retford, he was the son of the late William a coal miner and Rose Hannah Pickering née Mollitt of Clowne. William was born in 1863 ay Kilnhurst, Yorkshire, he died in 1903 aged 39 yrs, Rose Hannah Mollitt was born in 1864 at Kilnhurst, Yorkshire, they were married in 1883 their marriage was recorded in the Worksop registration district, they had 11 children, sadly two died in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 the family were living at 9 Rotherham Road, Clowne, Rose Hannah Pickering is 47 yrs and a widow , she is living with 7 of her children including Frances Sydney 23 yrs a coal miner. Frances Sydney married Alice Pacey (born 1882) on 7th October 1911 at Clowne , they lived at 5 Clipstone Road, Forest Town. and had 3 children, Philadelphia born 1912 Worksop, Luther born 1914 Mansfield and Frances born 1915 at Mansfield.

Military History

Corporal Francis Sydney Pickering enlisted at Mansfield he served with the 1/8th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he was killed in actiin on 8th June 1917, he is buried at Loos British Cemetery, Loos.

Extra Information

Francis' brother John James Luther Pickering probably married on the same day, as Francis and Alice. John also served in the war, with the Leicestershire Regiment.
