Family History

William Garton was born in 1890 he was the son of John a colliery worker and Agnes Garton née Mogue of Lime Grove, Forest Town. John Garton was born in 1860 at Castle Donnington, Leicestershire, Agnes Mogue was born in 1859 at Newbold, Leicestershire, they were married on 13th November 1883 at Hartshorne, Derbyshire, they went on to have 10 children, sadly two were to die in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 the family were living at Swann Lane, Mansfield Woodhouse, John 50 yrs is a colliery worker, he is living with his wife Agnes 52 yrs and their 8 children including William 21 yrs a coal carter.

Military History

Rifleman William Garton enlisted at Derby he served with the 10th Battalion Royal Irish Rifles, he was killed in action on 7th June 1917. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium.
