He was the son of James and Lizzy Holroyd of 393 Lenton Boulevard, later 18 Barrack Lane and then 236 Derby Road (all Nottingham). He was the brother of Alice Muriel, Gwendoline Lizzy and William Norman Holroyd. James Holroyd was an estate agent with offices in Front Street Arnold and Houndsgate Nottingham.

Military History

An official report described how 'A Company of the Artists' Rifles were wiped out when attacking Source Trench (which lay near a little stream then in flood called the Paddebeek) where enemy machine guns picked their targets among men held in the knee high suck of the mud.'
