Claude Henry Clark was born in 1888 at Nottingham and was the son of the late Walter a stone mason and the late Isabel Clark née Waplington of Nottingham. His father Walter was born in 1861 at Nettleton, Lincolnshire, he died in 1902 at Nottingham, he was 41 yrs old, his mother Isabel Waplington was born in 1858 at Nottingham, she died in 1898 at Nottingham, she was 40 yrs old. They were married in 1885 at Nottingham they had the following children, Walter Demi b1886, Claude Henry b1888 and Alice b1895 all were born in Nottingham. We have not been able to make a connection with Arnold and Daybrook but suspect that his parents actually lived there.
Corporal Claude Harry Clark enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Alfreton he served with “D” Company and it would appear that he was in hospital on 19.2.1916, returning to duty on 27.7.1916. He was twice wounded, the second time on 20.10.1916, when in the trenches near Fourquieres, keeping him from duty until the 7th December 1916. On 4th March 1917, the battalion was in the front line in trenches near Andover in France and at 5.15am that morning our barrage fell on the German trenches opposite. The German artillery reply came within three minutes catching some of the men as they started to move forward to attack the enemy trenches it was during this action that he was killed, he is buried at Hem Farm Military Cemetery
