Edward was born in Arnold, in 1883, he was married to Lydia Kirk who some time after the death of Edward was re-married to become Mrs Lydia Atherley of 42 West Street, Arnold, Nottingham. In the 1911 Census he is shown living with his wife Lydia and their son Edward at 32 Morris Street, Daybrook and his occupation is that of a coal miner and he worked at Gedling colliery. His pension record card show he had three children, Edward born 1908, Harriett Lydia born 1913 and Gladys born 1918 and that his widow was awarded a pension of 29 shillings and 7 pence a week which commenced on 13th January 1919.
Edward enlisted in Nottingham in October 1914 and was posted to the 1/4th Battalion of the Northumberland Fusiliers. This battalion was engaged on Tyne Tees defences until April 1915, when he went to France, landing there on the 15th July 1915. He died of wounds he received during action on 12th June 1918. He is buried at Sezanne Communal Cemetery, France
