Horace was born at Daybrook in 1886, the son of George a maltster and the late Mary Ann Mayfield née Pottles of 11 Portland Street, Daybrook, Nottingham. His father George was born in 1848 in Arnold and his mother was born in 1854 also in Arnold, they were married in 1872, their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration district. They went on to have 3 other children , Elizabeth b1871, Eliza b1876, and George b1880 , all were born in Arnold. His mother died in 1890 , the record being recorded in the Basford Registration District she was 37 yrs of age, Horace was only 4 yrs of age. he was educated firstly at the Daybrook Infants School and then at the British School Arnold. In the 1911 census his family are living at Portland Street, Daybrook his father is shown as a widower and working as a maltster at the local Home brewery where Horace is employed as a brewery carter.
Private Horace Mayfield, enlisted at Nottingham and served with the 1st Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment, He was killed in action on 14th March 1915 at Neuve Chappel and is buried in Tuileries British Cemetery, Belgium
