Family History

Charles Woodward was the seventh of 9 children born in 1877 to William and Mary Woodward. They were all born in Retford. William, their father, was a carter all his working life and lived mainly in Canal Street, Retford. By 1901 most of the children had left home leaving only Charles and a brother, John. Mary, their mother died after 1901 leaving just Charles with his father living together in 1911, still in Canal Street, William a pensioner carter and Charles working a plasterer. William died in Retford in 1915 at the age of 79.

Military History

Pte Charles Woodward Retford Times 11 Aug 1916 Official intimation has been received of the death in action of Private Chas. Woodward, Sherwood Foresters. Pte Woodward, who lived with his sister, Mrs Crossland of the Navigation Inn, Retford, prior to enlistment in October last, was working in South Wales as a plasterer. His brother Sgt J Woodward, Inniskilling Dragoons, the old Retford footballer is also doing his duty in France. Charles has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France
