Arthur was born in 1888 a Newark he was the son of Fred a police sergeant and Mary Whitlam née Merrill of 14 Belmont Terrace, Mansfield. Fred was born in 1855 at Hayton, Retford, Mary Merrill was born in 1856 at Oldcoates, they were married on 13th March 1879 at St Mary's Church Worksop, they went on to have 8 children. In 1911 his parents and siblings are living at 14 Belmont Terrace, Mansfield, Fred 57 yrs is a police pensioner, he is living with his wife Mary 56 yrs and 4 of their children. In 1911 Arthur is a lodger at George Street, Mansfield, he is 23 yrs single and a printer he is living with Eunice Elizabeth Shall 30 yrs a widow. Arthur married Florence Blyth on 13th April 1914 at St Emunds Church, Mansfield Woodhouse, They had no children they lived at The Limes 163 Yorke Street, Mansfield Woodhouse. Florence was awarded a pension of 13 shillings and 9d.
Private Arthur Whitlam attested on 11th December 1915 at Mansfield giving his age as d 27 years and 336 days he was a printer and lived at 163 Yorke Street, Mansfield Woodhouse, he was posted to the reserves. Mobilised on 5th October 1916 he was posted to the 10th battalion York and Lancaster Regiment. He embarked from Folkstone on 7th January 1917 and disembarked the same day at Calais. He was wounded, a shell wound to his head and abdomen on 22nd April 1917 and died the same day. Buried at Haute-Avesnes British Cemetery, France. Items returned to his widow were : ID disc, letters/photographs, New Testament, wallet, silver watch and tobacco pouch.
Mansfield Chronicle Advertiser; 10/05/1917: Photograph. Pte Whitlam of Yorke St Mansfield Woodhouse was killed on 22/04/1917. Enlisted October 1916 and went to France on 07/01/1917, it had been his 29th birthday on 09/01/1917 He was married to Miss Blythe of The Limes, Mansfield Woodhouse.
