Charles (Known as Charlie) Whiteland was born on 23rd February 1899 at 21 Ekowe Street, Basford, Nottingham, he was the only son of the late Charles Robert Whiteland a plumbers labourer and Mary Agnes Whiteland née Bell of 12 Wentworth Road, Sherwood, Nottingham. Charles Robert Whiteland was born in 1873 at Burton on Trent, he died in 1900 aged 27 yrs, Mary Agnes Bell was born in 1871 at Nottingham, they were married on 9th June 1894 at St Georges Church Nottingham, they had a further child a daughter Elsie born 1896. In the 1911 census the family are living at The Vicarage, Lode, Cambridge, Mary Agnes Whiteland 40 yrs is a housekeeper she is living with her 2 children, Elsie 15 yrs and Charlie 12 yrs of age.
Private Charlie Whiteland, enlisted at Nottingham and initially served with service number 3651 in the Notts Yeomanry before transferring to the 1st Battalion North Staffordshire Regiment. He was taken prisoner on 25th March 1918, and died in German hands on 22nd June 1918 [1] in a field hospital, Rothall. He is buried in Plaine French National Cemetery.(grave ref. 371). 1] The Commonwealth War Graves Commission gives his date of death as 20th June 1918. However 22nd June, is the date given in the family notice here, and is also the date cited by 'Soldiers Died' and in the register of the disposal of his personal effects.
Nottingham Post notice (abridged), 30 January 1919: 'Whiteland. Private Charles Whitehead 1st North Staffordshires, died June 22nd 1918 while a prisoner of war in Germany, only son of Mrs Whitehead, 13 Wentworth Road, Sherwood, age 19 years.'In memoriam published 23rd June 1919 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “WHITELAND. – In loving memory of Pte. Charlie Whiteland, 1st North Stafford Regt., only son of Mrs. Whiteland, 13 Wentworth-road, Sherwood, who was believed to have died June 22nd, 1918, while a prisoner of war in Germany, aged 19 years.
