James Redgate Pollard was born in 1881 at Nottingham, baptised on 7th December 1881 at St John’s, Bulwell he was the son of the late Thomas Pollard a carter and Elizabeth Pollard née Redgate of Bulwell, Nottingham. His father Thomas Pollard was born in 1853 at Bulwell, he died in 1890 aged 37 yrs his mother Elizabeth Redgate was born in 1859 at Bulwell, they were married on 31th December 1879 at St John’s church, Bulwell, they went on to have further children, Edwin, John, Cyril, Violet and Lily. James married Alice Oates (born 18th December 1881) in 1906 at Nottingham, they lived at 30 Vernon Road, Bulwell, they had 2 children, Harold James born 10th November 1908 and Frank born 24th March 1914. In the 1911 census the famil are living at 18 Lindsay Street, Hyson Green, James 29 yrs a packing case maker, he is living with his wife Alice 29 yrs and their son Harold 2 yrs of age. Commencing 9th December 1918 his widow was awarded a pension of 25 shillings and 5 pence a week.
Private James Redgate Pollard enlisted on 10th December 1915 at Nottingham, giving his age as 34 years and 1 month, his address was 30 Vernon Road, Basford, Nottingham, his next of kin was his wife Alice, he initially served with the service number 80774 with the Lincolnshire Regiment, he was serving with the 1/4th East Yorkshire Regiment when he was killed in action on 31st March 1918, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial.
Family grave and headstone, Bulwell (St Mary) churchyard: 'In loving memory of our dear mother, Elizabeth Richards, died Nov. 9th 1935, aged 74 years. Rest after weariness. Also Thomas Pollard, her beloved husband, died April 23rd 1890 aged 37 years. Also their beloved children, John Thomas & Mary & James Redgate Pollard killed in the Great War, 1914-1918. Jesus lover of my soul.’
