John Sutton and Caroline Shaw were born and bred in Retford. They married in 1887 and lived at Canal Row, Retford where John was employed as a general labourer. They produced a very large family consisting of six boys and six girls who were all born and bought up in Retford. Their names and year of births were, Charles 1888, Rebecca 1890, Gervice 1892, Jack (John) 1894, Harry 1897, Richard 1899, Anne 1901, Harriet 1904, Rosie 1905, Sally 1906, Caroline 1909 and Job in 1910. By 1901 the family had moved, living next door to the public baths in Fishery House, Retford where they lived for the next 10 years. In 1911, unusual for the time, all the 12 children were single and living at home. John senior and Gervice were working as general labourers, John junior as a railway engine cleaner and Harry as an apprentice moulder in an iron foundry.
John was a serving sailor in the Royal Navy long before the outbreak of the war having joined the service on 1st July 1912 , the first ship he served on was the Victory II he served on several vessels during his time with the navy the being the Indho P67 , He died on 27th November 1918 while at the 3rd Northern General Hospital n Sheffield. His cause of death given as tumour of the brain and influenza .He is buried in his home town of Retford in the East Cemetery.
