Family History

He was the son of William a labourer in a cotton mill and Mary E Johnson. He had a brother William and sisters Beatrice, Mary and Gertrude and a widowed grandmother Susannah Johnson. In 1901 the family were living at 67 Gleadon Street Manchester.

Military History

Joseph Johnson enlisted in Retford. It is likely that he was wounded by a sniper whilst the battalion was in the front line at Duck's Nest and died at a nearby Aid Station. After the armistice his remains were re-interred in Hill 10 Cemetery Suvla and grave I.B.8. Retford Times 17 Dec 1915 'Pte J Johnson Pte J Johnson of the 9th Batt Sherwood Foresters, whose portrait we produce above, died of wounds received at Suvla Bay on Nov 14 1915. He was brother of Mrs G B Darwin, daughter in law of Mr G Darwin, newsagent, Carolgate, Retford. He joined the Foresters on Aug 23rd 1914. He was at the time an employee of Messrs W J Jenkins and Son Ltd engineers, Retford. The deceased, who was 23 years of age, was formerly a sergeant in the Church Lads Brigade, Kearsley, Manchester, which he lived up to three years ago when he came to reside with his sister at Retford. At the outbreak of war, Pte Johnson, together with several chums joined the army and went out to the Dardanelles at the latter end of June last'. John Morse
