Family History

Herbert Davis was born in 1891 at Eastwood and was the only son of John a coal miner and Janet Davis née Welsh of 61 Broxtowe Drive, Mansfield. They later moved to 99 Drummond Road Skegness. His father John was born in 1868 at Marpool, Derbyshire, his mother Janet Welsh was born in 1871 at Ilkeston, they were married in 1889 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district. In the 1911 census the family were living at 61 Broxtowe Drive, Mansfield and were shown as John 43 yrs a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Janet 40 yrs and their son Herbert 20 yrs a coal miner hewer

Military History

Corporal Herbert Davis enlisted October 1914 in Huntingdon whilst residing at Mansfield. He served with the 1st battalion Bedfordshire Regiment. He was killed in action on 4th September 1916 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.
