Solomon was born in 1883, at Eastwood, Nottinghamshire, the son of James and Mary Ann Davis of 29 Calverton Road, Arnold, Nottinghamshire. Solomon married his wife Lily Cooke Barnes born 25th June 1883 in 1906, their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration district, they had the following children, Lily Louisa born 1907, Agnes Charlotte born 1910, Dorothy born 1911 and Ida born 1914. all were born in Arnold they lived at 87 Gedling Lane, Arnold, Nottingham. In the 1911 census they are shown living on Gedling Lane and state they have been married for 4 yrs and have had 3 children one of who had died. His occupation is that of coal miner - hewer Following his death his widow Lily was awarded a pension of 22 shillings and 6 pence which commenced on 26th March 1917 and was increased to 28 shillings and 9 pence a week on 4th April 1917.
Private Solomon Davis enlisted into the 12th (Pioneer) Battalion of the Sherwood Foresters at Nottingham on 9th December 1914,he gave his age as 31 yrs and 7 months his occupation is given as a coal miner. The 12th Battalion did not take part in the offensive which opened on the 1st July 1916 (more commonly known as The First Day of the Somme). They came into the Somme battle as reinforcements in their Pioneer Role in late July, Soloman whilst he was out on a carrying party, helping to take stores and supplies to other men of his battalion who were trying to improve the front line trenches for those holding them, was killed in action. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval memorial on the Somme
