George was born in 1887 at Gainsborough and was the son of William Henry Gill a assurance agent and Frances Gill (nee Abbott ) In 1891 the family are living at 18 Tennyson Street, Gainsborough with their three children Harry, George and Ethel. By the 1901 census Frances has remarried and is now the wife of Joseph Rotherham a joiner and they live at Laburnham Cottage, Gainsborough , George is shown as his stepson and he is 14 years of age and an office boy. In the 1911 census he has left home and is living at 10 Clinton Terrace ,Thrumptn Lane, Retford, he is lodging with Eliza Maw a lodging house keeper. George is 24 years of age, single and is working as a pattern maker (gas engineering).
George enlisted in Retford and served with the 2/7th battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment. He was killed in action, his body was never recovered and identified and his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial. Sergt George Gill Retford Times 10th May 1918 So far nothing further has been heard of Sergt Geo Gill, Notts and Derby, husband of Mrs Gill, 35 Grove Street, Retford, who was reported as missing on March 21st and not April 21st as stated last week. Sergt Gill was a popular member of the Retford Town Football Club and was employed at Messrs Jenkins and Co’s Works as a pattern maker before joining the Army in 1914. He belonged to the Sherwood Rangers and was afterwards transferred to the Notts and Derbys. His brother Frank was taken a prisoner of war by the Germans a year ago. Mrs Gill has two brothers serving with the Sherwood Rangers in Palestine.
His brother Frank also served during the Great War, serving with The Leicstershire Regiment and was taken prisoner in 1917.
