Alfred Brown

Pte Alfred Brown Worksop Guardian 21 July 1916 The sympathy of the townspeople at large is extended to Mrs. Brown, Edward-Street, Worksop, who recently lost her husband, Mr. E Brown, Great Central goods guard, as the result of an accident, in the further bereavement which has befallen her by the death from wounds received in action of her son, Pte, Alfred Brown, of the West Yorkshire Regiment. Mrs. Brown received the official intimation of her son’s death on Tuesday morning. The message which conveys an expression of sympathy from the King and Queen does not give details but simply states that the young soldier died on July 3rd, the beginning of the great advance, from wounds received. By tragic circumstances, the news of the lad’s death came on his 19th birthday… Before enlisting, Brown, who was a fine, well conducted young fellow, was employed at the G.C. Station refreshment rooms and latter in the dinning car of the London to Bradford G.C. train. He enlisted in Feb: last year, when 17 years of age, and was drafted out to France in December. His regiment had been in the thick of the recent fighting, and Brown, we may be sure, bore himself bravely. Poor lad, he was very young to lay down his life for his country. He was one of the gallant bands of railway men of whom their colleagues in Worksop and their fellow townsmen in general, have so much reason to be proud. We hope Mrs. Brown and her family will find some solace in their trouble in the sympathy which is felt for them.
