John William Williams was born in 1877 in Liverpool He married his wife Catherine Jane Roberts in 1898 in Liverpool, they went on to have 2 children, Frank b1899 and Edith b1902 both were born in Liverpool. In the 1911 census the family are living at 93 Vernon Road, Basford Nottingham and are shown as Joh 34 yrs a ledger clerk, he is living with his wife Catherine 36 yrs (born Liverpool) and their 2 children , Frank 12 yrs a scholar and Edith 9 yrs a scholar.
Private John William Williams, enlisted at Nottingham and served with the 87th (S) Company Army Ordnance Corps, he died at 102 Stanley Road, Nottingham, on 26th April 1917. He is buried in Nottingham Church Cemetery.
Article published 30th April 1917 in the Nottingham Daly Express :- The inquest into his death was held on 28th April 1917. “A Soldier's Imagination. “An inquest was held on the body of John William Williams, 40, of 108, [?] Stanley-road, Sherwood-rise, who was on Thursday found hanging by a rope from the bannister at his home. “The widow, who resides at 108, Stanley-road, stated her husband, a traveller, was called up for military service in November last, joining the A.O.C. He came home for six days' leave on Saturday, April 21, being due to return on Friday morning. [27th April 1917] “Witness said she left home on Thursday morning last, and on returning two hours later she found all the doors locked. An entrance was forced and deceased was discovered hanging. “Asked if her husband had appeared happy in the Army, witness said he developed delusions as to being court-martialled for offences which afterwards were found to be quite imaginary. “The jury returned a verdict of “Suicide whilst temporarily insane.” Above article is courtesy of Jim Grundy and his facebook pages Small Town Great War Hucknall 1914-1918
