Family History

George Williams was one of eight children born to Frederick and Emma Elizabeth Williams. Frederick was a farm bailiff and as such, moved around the local area, East Drayton, Wymeswold Leicestershire, Edwinstowe and Retford. Their eight children ranged from being born in 1885 to 1907, George being born at East Drayton, Notts in 1889. By 1911 George had joined the army serving as a Lance Corporal in the 1st Battalion of the Sherwood Forester in India. Frederick Williams died shortly after his son, in Retford in 1915 aged 60.

Military History

As George was in the 1st Battalion Sherwood Foresters before the war, it is unknown whether he was continuing his service or rejoined after time served. According to one record he was resident at Loughborough, Leicestershire and enlisted at Nottingham. He was drafted to France where he died of wounds recieved and is buried in the Estaires Communal Cemetery and Extension, Northern France
