William Jackson was born in 1893 and was the son of Edward a basket maker and Mary Ann Jackson née Morris of Castle Hill East Leake. His father was born in 1866 at Kensworth, Hertfordshire, his mother Mary Ann Morris was born in 1873 at the Riddings Derbyshire, they were married in 1889 their marriage was recorded at the Basford registration district, they went on to have the following children, John Alfred b1891 Basford, William b1893 Bulwell, Elsie May b1894 Bulwell, Shadrack b1895 Nottingham, Edward Henry b1897 East Leake and Joseph b1901 East Leake, In the 19011 census the family are living at Main Street, East Leake and are shown as Edward 43 yrs a basket maker, he is living with his wife Mary Ann 38 yrs and their children, John Alfred 20 yrs a plaster dresser, William 18 yrs a farm labourer, Elsie May 17 yrs a basket maker, Shadrack 16 yrs a plaster gypsum pit worker, Edward 14 yrs a worker at wicker works and Joseph 10 yrs a scholar.
Corporal William Jackson enlisted at Loughborough whilst residing at East Leake , he served with the 1st battalion Leicestershire Regiment. He was killed in action on 20th November 1917 and is buried at Ribecourt British Cemetery Sp Mem B.2
His brother Sapper Shadrach Jackson attested on 8th December 1915 at Loughborough, his address was Main Street, East Leake, he was 20 yrs and 213 days old, he was a groom, his next of kin was his father Edward of the same address. He was posted to the reserves the following day and mobilised for war on 31st January 1916 and reported to Aldershot barracks on 1st February 1916. He was posted to the King's Own Scottish Borderers and landed in France on 13th November 1916, he was transferred to the 297th railway company Royal Engineers on 9th March 1917. He died at 35th General Hospital, Calais at 14.40 hrs on 7th June 1919 the cause of death was peritonitis and appendicitis. He is buried at Les Baraques Military Cemetery, Sangatte grave reference 18.A.13A Private Edward Henry Jackson, enlisted at Nottingham and served with the 15th Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment, he was killed in action on 13th July 1917. He is buried in Villers-Faucon Communal Cemetery.Grave Reference: C 10
