John Lyndon Knowles was born in 1898 at Nottingham, he was the son of Charles a timber merchant and Louisa Knowles née Barber of 25 Carisbrooke Drive Nottingham. His father Charles was born in 1860 at Birmingham, his mother Louisa Barber was born in 1860 at Nottingham, they were married in 1891 at Nottingham and went on to have a daughter Eleanor Christine born 1893 at Nottingham. In the 1911 census the family are living at 13 Herbert Road, Nottingham and are shown as Charles Knowles 51 yrs a timber merchant, he is living with his wife Louisa 51 yrs and their son John Lyndon 13 yrs a scholar also living at the address were two servants.

Military History

Second Lieutenant John Lyndon Knowles served with the 5th battalion The Rifle Brigade and was attached to the 7th battalion. He was killed in action on 18th August 1916, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial (Pier and Face 16B and 16C).
