Arthur Noel (Noel) was the son of William Edwin Dalton and Fanny Richardson nee Cutts. His father William Edwin was born in Ilkeston, Derbyshire, birth registered 1866 (O/N/D Nottingham) and was the son of William Dalton and Henrietta Dalton (nee Johnson). He was baptised on 4 April 1869 at Nottingham Holy Trinity; his parents were living on Clumber Street where they were also registered on the 1871 Census. His father was a butcher. His mother Fanny Richardson Cutts was also born on 2 February 1866 (J/F/M Basford), also in Ilkeston. William and Fanny were married on 28 February 1895 (J/F/M Nottingham) at Nottingham All Saints. According to the 1911 Census they had had six children of whom only five had survived infancy/childhood. Five children were recorded on the census of 1901 and 1911, all born in Nottingham: Arthur Noel b. 23 April 1995 (A/M/J Nottingham), Bertha Gwendoline b. 2 October 1896 (O/N/D Nottingham), Harold Stewart Richardson b. 6 June 1900 (J/A/S Nottingam) bap. 1 August 1900 Nottingham All Saints, Gilbert Stanley b. 21 January 1904 (J/F/M Nottingham) and Gertrude Fanny b. 22 December 1907 (registered 1908 J/F/M Nottingham). Harold's baptism record of 1900 gives the family's address as 99 Portland Road and the family was still living there at the time of the census the following year. William (34), was a pork butcher's assistant. He and Fanny (34) had three children Arthur (5), Bertha (4) and Harold (under 1 year). They were still at the same address in 1911. All five children were at home on the night of the census: Noel (15) Bertha (14), Harold (11), Gilbert (7) and Gertrude (3). In 1919 when William Edwin completed a form for the army listing his son Noel's surviving blood relatives he named himself and his wife Fanny and Noel's siblings Bertha (22), Harold (19), Gilbert (15) and Gertrude. They were all living at 6 Walter Street, Tennyson Street, Nottingham. This was still the family home when William Edwin died two years later on 1 December 1921. Fanny Dalton was living at 24 Byfield Street, Nottingham, at the time the 1939 England & Wales Register was compiled, she was described as a widow of independent means. She died in 1951 (O/N/D Bingham). Of Noel's siblings: Bertha Gwendoline married Claude Baden Barton in 1930 (J/F/M Nottingham). In 1939 they were living at 72 Wensley Road, Arnold, Nottingham. Claude (b. 27 May 1900) was a manager (engineer's machine tool maker); Bertha's occupation was given as unpaid domestic duties. She died in 1986 (A/M/J Nottingham). Harold Stewart Richardson married Dorothy Fox (b. 5 September 1903) in 1928 (A/M/J Nottingham). In 1939 they were living at 60 Joyce Avenue, Nottingham; Harold was an engineer (adding machind mechanic). He died in 1983 (J/F/M Nottingham). Gilbert Stanley married Nellie Deacon (b. 23 April 1905) in 1934 (J/A/S Nottingham). In 1939 they were living at 709 Western Boulevard; Gilbert was a tool setter (automatic machine engineering). Also in the household were Ellen Deacon (b. 4 June 1869), a widow, and John G Deacon (b. 7 October 1902) a grocery shop assistant. Gilbert died in 1974 (J/F/M Nottingham). Gertrude Fanny married Wilfred Beardsley in 1930 (J/F/M Nottingham). In 1939 they were living at 21 Foster Avenue, Beeston; Wilfred (b. 24 May 1907) was employed as an 'AFS' with Beeston and Stapleford UDC. Gertrude died in 1992 (J/F/M Nottingham).
Arthur Noel enlisted on 6 September 1914 at the age of 19 years and 136 days and joined at (?)Manchester on 9 September. He served at home until joining BEF France on 14 May 1915. He was taken prisoner 24/27 March 1918 at Cassell and died on 13 November of pneumonia while a prisoner of war in Germany. He was buried in Niederzwehren Cemetery (grave ref II.K.9). He qualified for the 1915 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal.
