Family History

George was born at Marnham in 1895 and was the son of Ephraim a farm labourer and Emma Portas, née Walters they live in Sturton and his parents had a very large family having 11 children. Ephraim was born in 1864 at Goulceby, Lincolnshire, Emma Walters was born in 1868 at Darlton, they were married on 2nd December 1886 at St John's church, Eat Markham. In the 1911 census the family are still living in Sturton with 5 of their children , however George has moved out and is now living as a lodger with Tom Wilkinson and his family at 28 Lincoln Terrace, Gainsborough. He meets his future wife Nellie Bell while in Gainsborough and they are married in 1913 their marriage is recorded in the Doncaster registration district, they live at 14 Britannia Terrace, Gainsborough, they have a son John George born 20th March 1914. Commencing 11th March 1918 his widow is awarded a pension of 18 shillings and 9 pence a week.

Military History

Private George Portas service records does not appear to have survived, however the documents Soldiers Died in the Great War states he was born at Markham ( 3 census returns state Marnham so possibly a typo ) and that he enlisted in Sheffield .He first served with service number 25451 in the York and Lancaster Regiment and was later transferred to the 21st Bn Tyneside Scottish Northumberland Fusiliers and that he was killed in action on 22nd August 1917 he is buried in Hargicourt British cemetery, France
