Family History

John was born in 1889 at Sturton the son of Philip a blacksmith and Ann Brownlow, of Sturton-le-Steeple. In the 1901 census he is living with his family in Watkins Lane,Sturton he is 12 years of age and a scholar. By the time of the 1911 census he has left home and is a gardener living with 5 other gardeners at Osberton Gardens, part of the Osberton Estate , Worksop , he is single and 22 years of age.

Military History

His service record does not appear to have survived, however Soldiers died in the great war records show he was born at Sturton and resided in Chesterfield when he enlisted and enlisted in Ripon. He died of wounds on 18th September 1918 aged 30 years and is buried in Terlincthun British cemetery Wiimille, France
