Arthur was born in 1875 at Sturton, he was the son of George a farmer and Rebecca Brown of Springs Road, Sturton. In the 1901 census he is single and living at home with his parents and is a farmer's son working on the farm. By the 1911 census Arthur has left home although he is still living at Sturton. He has married his wife Mary; they have been married for 2 years and have a son Arthur who is 1 year of age.
