Family History

Arthur William Maiden was born on 29th May 1894 at Willaston, Cheshire and was the son of the late Enoch a railway signalman and Elizabeth Maiden née Cottrell of 1, Gladstone Terrace, Willaston, Birkenhead. His father Enoch was born on 16th March 1856 at Dawley, Shropshire and died on 21st June 1903 as a result of an accident on a railway line. his mother Elizabeth Cottrell was born in 1857 at Eastham Cheshire, they were married on 2nd September 1879 at Willaston and went on to have the following children, all of whom were born at Willaston they were Minnie b1880, Albert Edward b1882, John b1884, Edith Lilian b1886, Thomas b1888, Bessie Cottrell b1890, Florence May b1892, Arthur William b1894 and Bertie b1898. In the 1911 census the family are living at Neston Road, Willaston and are shown as Elizabeth 54 years head of the family a widow, she is living with her children, John 26 yrs single a shipping clerk, Arthur 16 yrs single a domestic gardener and Bertie 13 yrs a scholar. It is believed that Arthur William found work as a gardener in the Thoresby Estate, Nottinghamshire in 1913/1914

Military History

Private Arthur William Maiden enlisted at Liverpool, whilst residing at Willaston and served with the 19th battalion The King's Liverpool Regiment. He landed in France on 7th November 1915 and was killed in action during the battle of Trones Wood on the Somme. He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
