Henry was born in 1892 in Beckingham the son of Thomas an agricultural worker and Mary Clarke. In the 1901 census he is living with his family on High Street Beckingham, he has 5 siblings and is a scholar. By the 1911 census he is listed as a servant single 19 years of age and a cowman working for William Ranby a farmer and living with him and his family at Croft House Beckingham.
Henry enlisted into the army at Epworth and originally served with service number 26593 in the South Staffordshire Regiment . He eventually was transferred to Z Company 4th battalion Worcestershire Regiment. In the spring of 1917 the British Army was attacking the strong system of German defences called the Hindenburg Line. Many casualties resulted, among whom was Henry Clark, whose body was never recovered and his name is on the Arras Memorial in France
