Arthur Charles Bailey was born in 1894 at Mansfield, he was the son of William Arthur a cycle enameller and Harriet Eliza Bailey née Barningham and the brother of Gladys Matilda, Dorothy May, Edith Annie and Winifred Maud Bailey. His father William Arthur was born in 1869 at Newark, his mother Harriett Eliza Barningham was born in 1870 at Mansfield, they were married on 26th December 1892 at St Marys church, Nottingham, they went on to have 5 children. In 1911 the family lived at 26 Grove Road Lenton William Arthur 42yrs is a cycle enameller, he is living with his wife Harriett Eliza 41 yrs and their children, they later at 10 Wellington Square Derby Road (both Nottingham).
Lance Sergeant Arthur Charles Bailey, enlisted in Nottingham and served with the 2nd Battalion Grenadier Guards. He landed in France with his battalion on 12th September 1914 and he was killed in action on 12th October 1915 [1] and is buried in St Mary's A.D.S Cemetery grave reference 9.D.1[1] The Commonwealth War Graves Commission record his death as taking place on 11th October. However, it is shown as 12th October in 'Soldiers Died in the Great War,' the register of the disposal of his personal effects, on the caption of the photograph when his death was first reported and in the family's 'in memoriam' notice below
In memoriam published 12th October 1917 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “BAILEY. – In loving memory of our only son and brother, Lance-Sergt. Arthur (Arch) Bailey, Grenadier Guards, who made the great sacrifice October 12th, at Loos, 1915.
