John Henry Ayto was born in 1897 at Newark and was the son of Thomas a general labourer and Sarah Jane Ayto née Newstead, of 66, Northgate, Newark. His father Thomas was born in 1872 at Dry Doddington, Lincolnshire, his mother Sarah Jane Newstead was born in 1873 at Balderton, they were married in 1895 at Newark and went on to have 4 children, George b1894 Balderton, John Henry b1897 Newark, Arthur William b1900 Newark and Annie Elizabeth b1906 Newark. In the 1911 census the family are shown living at 15 Queens Road, Newark and are shown as Thomas 39 yrs a labourer, he is living with his wife Sarah Jane 38 yrs and their children, George 17 yrs a maltster, John Henry 14 yrs a barley dresser, Arthur William 11 yrs a scholar and Annie Elizabeth 5 yrs.
Lance Corporal John Henry Ayto enlisted at Newark and served with the 2/8th battalion Sherwood Foresters. He died on 19th June 1917 aged 20 yrs. He is buried in Newark Town Cemetery.
Article published 11th July 1917 in the Newark Advertiser :- Second son of Thomas & Sarah Jane Ayto, 66 Northgate, Newark. Attended Lovers Lane school before employment with Messrs. Gilstrap, Earp & Co. Enlisted Nov. 1915 and served through Irish Rebellion, going to France Feb. 1917. Fell ill with consumption, returned to England but died in London hospital. Has two brothers serving: Pte. Charles Ayto, Royal Engineers (Water Transport), in Mesopotamia. Pte. Arthur William Ayto, Royal Marines, at Chatham.
