Family History

Ernest Astill was born in 1894 at Plumtree and was christened on 22nd May 1894 and was the son of the late Edward Astill a farm labourer and the late Elizabeth Astill nee Wilford of New Row, Plumtree. His father Edward was born in 1845 at Plumtree, he died in 1903 aged 58 yrs, his mother Elizabeth Wilford was born in 1844 at Normanton on the Wolds, she died in 1901 she was aged 57 yrs, they were married on 27th February 1881 at Plumtree and went on to have the following children, Arthur b1885, Albert b1886, Annie b1888, Edith b1891, Emma b1892, Ernest b1894 Elsie b1898 and John Robert b1900. Following the death of his parents Ernest was living at Hill Farm, Widmerpool in the 1911 census he is shown as 16 yrs of age and is a farm labourer, working and living with John Newbound 38 yrs a farmer.

Military History

Pioneer Ernest Astill enlisted at Nottingham, he initially served with the service number 11875 in the Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He landed in France on 8th September 1914. He later transferred to the Royal Engineers and was killed in action on 17th October 1916, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial Pier and Face 8 A and 8 D
