Family History

Samuel Bird was born in 1894 at Giltbrook and was the youngest son of Sarah Ann Bird née Henshaw and the late Thomas Bird a carpenter of Alnn House Nottingham Road Giltbrook Nottinghamshire. His father Thomas was born in 1848 at Papplewick, he died in 1900 aged 52 yrs, his mother Sarah Ann Henshaw was born in 1849 at Cotmanhay, they were married in 1870 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they went on to have the following children, Thomas b1871 Cotmanhay, Mary Ann b1873 Kimberley, William b1874 Giltbrook, Sarah Ann b1883 Giltbrook, Lily b1888 Giltbrook, Rose b1890 Giltbrook, Samuel b1894 Giltbrook, In the 1911 census the family are living at Alnn House Giltbrook and are shown as Sarah Ann 62 yrs a widow, she is living with her two children, William 36 yrs a coal miner hewer and Samuel 17 yrs a postal worker, also living at the address is Ada Bird 17 yrs a house maid she is a niece to Sarah Ann Bird.

Military History

Signaller Samuel Bird enlisted at Nottingham on 2nd June 1915, he gave his age as 22 yrs and his address as 2 Nottingham Road, Giltbrook, his occupation was that of a Postal Clerk. He served with 2nd Battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment having been awarded a First Class Certificate for signalling and telephoning. He arrived in France during September 1916 and was wounded in the back soon afterwards. he was later gassed and was killed in action on 9th February 1917, he is buried at Vermelles British Cemetery, France.
