John Henry Walker was born in 1895 at Eastwood and was the son of Albert a coal miner hewer and Mary Ann Walker née James of 3 Villa Road Adwick-le-Street Doncaster Yorkshire. His father Albert was born in 1868 at Eastwood, his mother Mary Annie James was born in 1870 at Newthorpe, they were married in 1885 at Basford and went on to have the following children, Joseph b189, Albert b1892, John Henry b1895, Edith b1897, Annie b1900 and Alfred b1904, all were born in Eastwood. In the 1911 census the family are living at 53 Ings Lane, Adwick Le Street, Doncaster and are shown as Albert 43 yrs a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Annie 42 yrs and their children, Joseph 22 yrs a coal miner, Albert 19 yrs a coal miner, Albert Henry 16 yrs a coal miner pony driver, Edith 14 yrs no occupation listed, Annie 10 yrs a scholar and Alfred 7 yrs of age. At the time of his death his next of kin are shown as his sister Annie and father Albert of 36 Hexthorpe Road, Doncaster.
Private John Henry Walker enlisted at Doncaster, he served with 10th battalion King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, he was killed in action on 1st July 1916 the First day of the Battle of the Somme, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval memorial, Somme, France.
