Family History

Harold Percy Saxton was born in 1880 at Eastwood and was the son of John James a printers labourer and Lydia Saxton née Poxon 10 Two Trees Lane Denton Lancashire. His father John James was born in 1845 at Eastwood, his mother Lydia Poxon was born in 1845 at Weston on Trent, Derbyshire she died in 1919 aged 73 yrs, they were married on 15th November 1866 at St Marys Church, Eastwood, they went on to have 9 children sadly 4 died in infancy or early childhood, their children were, Elizabeth Ann b1867, John William b1868, Samuel Henry b1871 and Lydia b1874 , they were all born in Eastwood, Gertrude Mary was born in 1875 at Lowdham, George Frederick was born in 1876 at Chesterfield, Dorothy Agnes was born in 1879 at Derby, Harold Percy was born in 1880 at Eastwood and David was born in 1880 at Rainhill, St Helens. In the 1911 census the family were living at 10 Two Trees Lane, Denton, Lancashire, they were shown as John James 65 yrs a printer labourer, he is living with is wife Lydia 65 yrs and their children, Dorothy Agnes 32 yrs a dress maker, Harold Percy 30 yrs out of work, also living with them is a granddaughter Lydia Brookes 11 yrs of age.

Military History

Private Harold Saxton enlisted on 7th October 1914 at Preston, Lancashire he served with 2nd battalion Lancashire Fusiliers. He landed in France on 7th October 1914. He was wounded in France and returned to England where he was treated at the red cross hospital The Royal Victoria Netley, Hampshire. He died of his wounds on 19th December 1915 and is buried at Denton Cemetery,

Extra Information

His younger brother David Saxton also served and died in the Great War, he served with the service number 4912 in the 10th battalion Lancashire Fusiliers, he was killed in action on 27th June 1916 and having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.
