Family History

Ernest Reeve was born in 1892 at Eastwood and was the son of Lewis a licensee and farmer. and his second wife Catherine Reeve née Wilson of The Devonshire Arms, Beeley, Rowley Derbyshire. His father Lewis was born in 1853 at Greasley his first marriage was to Jane Wilson (1853-1889) whom he married on 22nd April 1878 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they went on to have the following children, Thomas b1879, John b1880, Frank b1883, Henry b1886, Fred b1887 and Lewis Herbert b1889 all born in Eastwood. Following the death of his fathers first wife Jane in 1889 he went to re marry on 6th September 1890 at Nottingham Catherine Wilson born 1850, she died in 1917 they had the following children, Ernest b1892 Greasley, Catherine b1894 Pilsley. In the 1911 census the family are living at Devonshire Arms, Beeley, Derbyshire and are shown as Lewis 57 yrs a licensee he is living with his (second) wife Catherine 60 yrs and their children, Lewis Herbert 21 yrs a farmers son working on his farm, Ernest 19 yrs a railway clerk and Catherine 17 yrs assisting in her fathers business.

Military History

Private Ernest Reeve enlisted at Bakewell whilst residing at Beeley, he served with the 1st battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he was killed in action on 14th April 1917 having no known grave his name is commemorated on Thiepval memorial, Some, France.
